I have been getting some painting tips from the very talented Matthew Mancini. He was a Toronto-based artist who is now located in Haliburton. I visited his studio, which is in an old farm house near Minden. We set up a simple still life, so that we could paint side by side. The idea was to do a quick study, so that I could work out my insecurities with a trained professional.

Matt in his studio. His painting is on the right.

As you can see, he is much better at this than I am…and much faster. He has already lapped me at least once with this painting! I suppose being a full-time painter for his entire working career, and his extensive classical training, gives him some sort of advantage.

This is my study.

The vase is what not to do, the onion is what to do, though you can’t really tell from this picture. I’m really happy with the information I got, Matt is a great instructor.
